So I woke up this morning at 3.30am and unfortunately, couldn’t go back to sleep at all. I got up, and started listening to music from around 2000 – in particular, Leftfield’s album, Rhythm and Stealth. Wow, what an album. Why don’t they make music like this anymore?! Where has all the creativity gone? I’m slowly beginning to accept that we live in completely different times now where creativity and individuality seems to be slowly scrubbed out of society. It’s a difficult time for real music artists to live and breathe and grow and find success because all the mainstream rubbish seems to be the stuff that’s dominating and making the most money. I hate to sound like a music snob and I really hope that I’m not coming off as one here (I actually really dislike them myself!), but I just think that the soulful, truly creative mainstream music of the say 70’s – early noughties is totally different to the mainstream stuff of today which always seems to strike me as entirely hollow, shallow and at times, misogynistic and hateful. What on earth are we teaching our kids today? To be so materialistic and looks based that it’s impossible to function on a normal level with others? I don’t know… Thoughts and comments welcome below, as always.
